Vamana

Vamana

Vamana is the fifth avatar of Vishnu, He has appeared in Treta yuga.

The Bhagavata purana describes that Vishnu descended as the Vamana avatar to restore the authority of Indra over the heavens, as it had been taken by asura king Bali.

Vamana was born to Aditi and Kashyapa

Bali was the great grandson of Hiranyakshipu, the grand son of Prahlada and son of Virochana.

Vamana, in the guise of a short Brahmin (dwarf) carrying a wooden umbrella, went to the king to request three steps of land.

Bali consented, against the warning of his guru, Sukracharya.

Then Vamana stepped from heaven to earth with the first step, from earth to the Satya loka abode of Brahma with the second.

Then Vamana asked Bali were he can place third step. Bali offered his head to step on

Vamana then placed his foot and gave the king immortality for his humility.

Vamana give to Bali Patala loka to rule.

In giant form, Vamana is known as Trivikrama.
