CHAMUNDA is one of the most terrible and wrathful forms of the Goddess who emerged from the forehead of Durga to fight the demons Chanda and Munda. It all started with the fact that the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha overthrew the Gods from heaven, and the Gods prayed to Shakti, asking Her for protection. Shakti came to earth as Mahashakti or Durga, who has many manifestations. In a great battle, the Goddess destroyed Shumbha and Nishumbha and other demons who came to their aid. The most difficult thing was to defeat the demon Raktabija, because every drop of his blood spilled on the ground turned into another demon
But Durga drank all the blood of Raktabija. During the battle, a scary-faced, dark Chamunda appeared from Her forehead, dressed in the skin of a tiger, emaciated, like a skeleton with bones covered with skin, with sunken scarlet eyes, with a wide open mouth from which fangs protruded and a moving tongue stuck out, roaring in a terrible voice, holding in her ten hands an arrow, a whip, a sword, a staff, a shield, an axe, a lasso crowned with a skull, and other weapons. Her hair stood on end, and at the ends of the hair were snakeheads, Chamunda's smile frightened everyone present, and Her neck was adorned with a necklace of skulls and bones. After killing the demons, Chamunda brought their heads to Durga.
Chanda is the personification of ignorance, and Munda symbolizes anger and rage. Each demon reflected some terrible quality, and thus the Great Goddess destroyed anger, ignorance, and all other demonic manifestations of human nature. By repeating the name of Chamunda in the Navarna Mantra, we acknowledge the presence of negative qualities in our hearts and strive to transform consciousness, destroying demons and striving for Divine perfection.
